Well Woman Preventative Care. PAP Smears. and Problem Visits

A Well Woman Exam or an annual preventative visit is an integral part of maintaining your health.  The exam includes screening, evaluation, counseling and preventative care to help patients minimize health risks and maintain a healthy lifestyle.   This exam often includes a pelvic/cervical and a breast exam.  PAPs, arranging mammograms, screening for STDs, and pelvic exam are included with most commercial insurance.

Your insurance plan decides what is included in a preventative exam, which is your responsibility to know prior to appointment.  Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans Well Woman’s Exam only include breast exam, pelvic exam, and collection of PAP every 24 months.  Different rules apply, and it is important to check your carrier's rules.

Feel free to visit the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists website for further information regarding your exam:

A preventative visit is different than a problem visit.  A preventative visit focuses on screening for unknown health problems in a person who feels well.

A problem visit focuses on a symptoms or signs or problems that the patient is experiencing or a diagnosis that a patient is already known to have.  It generally includes a history, a physical exam, discussion of the problem, forming an initial impression, ordering tests, and arranging follow-up, medication and/or medication refills.  This may also include collection and review of records.

Why make a distinction between problem and preventative exams?

Most insurance payers provide coverage for both problem and preventative visits, but they generally limit preventative care and how often it can be done.  There are strict regulations about what qualifies as preventative care.  Policies and deductibles are different for preventative versus problem visits.  Some insurance companies allow both a problem visit and a preventative visit on the same day, and some do not.  Please make sure that you are aware of your company's policies, and keep in mind there are hundreds of polices within a single insurance carrier.  Please communicate with staff when scheduling an appointment so that they can schedule the correct type of visit.  Finally, please note that it is impossible to predict ahead of time how a visit will be billed, since that depends on what the patient and provider discuss during the appointment.

Treatment of Abnormal PAP Smears

It can be distressing if your PAP smear results return with abnormalities.  Rest assured that we are equipped to perform any further tests necessary in our office to determine the nature of the abnormality, including:

  • colonoscopy

  • biopsy

Once we receive the results of these tests, Dr. Foust can counsel you on next steps to ensure optimal treatment and address any concerns.

Adolescent Gynecological Care

Gynecological care is a crucial part of overall adolescents' overall health.  It's important to establish a relationship with a physician who can guide them through important milestones.  An annual pelvic exam is recommended for all women over age 18, and younger patients may receive a modified exam if necessary.  Our medical staff is especially sensitive with our younger patients as they may feel overwhelmed by gynecological exams.  These exams are an important opportunity for patients to voice questions or concerns about their bodies as they enter adulthood.

Birth Control Counseling
For adolescents and young women who are sexually active, contraception is the strongest possible protection against pregnancy.  There are many contraceptive options available, including:
  • oral contraceptives
  • injections
  • vaginal rings
  • condoms
  • diaphragms
  • intrauterine devices (IUDs)
Our medical staff will discuss the advantages, disadvantages, and effectiveness of each method so that each patient can make an informed decision about which one is right for her.

Gynecological Consultations
Gynecological concerns can arise at any time and at any age.  When problems arise, it is important to set up a consultation with your physician.  At these appointments our medical staff will discuss your symptoms thoroughly so that we can perform any diagnostic tests and discuss proper treatment options.
Our office is equipped to perform different types of ultrasound procedures in a comfortable and familiar environment for our patients.
Trans-abdominal Ultrasounds use a small handheld device that passed across the lower abdomen in order to view the bladder, ovaries, Fallopian tubes, cervix, or uterus.  These are commonly performed when searching for large fibroids or other issues.
Trans-vaginal Ultrasounds are performed by inserting a device into the vagina to view the abdomen more closely.  These are often performed for issues with infertility and for diagnosing other issues.  In some cases, a biopsy can be performed during the ultrasound using small tools inserted during the procedure.
In a biopsy, the doctor collects a tissue sample from the area in question in order to fully investigate and properly diagnose the problem.  We routinely perform a variety of biopsy procedures in the office, including vulvar, endometrial, cervical (colposcopy) and biopsies of lesions.  These biopsies are necessary to diagnose and treat a variety of issues.  Our medical staff is sensitive to the stress that these procedures can cause our patients.  We will answer any questions and help ease the patient through the appointment and any steps to come.
Urodynamic Testing and Treatment
Urodynamic tests evaluate the bladder function and efficiency.  If you are experiencing incontinence or other bladder-related issues, this test may be an important step in your treatment.  You will be asked to arrive for your test with a full  bladder.  The test measures the volume of urine and the rate at which the bladder empties.  A thin, flexible tube (catheter) will then be inserted through the urethra to measure the volume of any urine remaining in the bladder.  We perform this test in the office to allow the patient to undergo testing in a familiar and comfortable environment and allow us to receive and discuss results more quickly.

Menopausal Consultations and Treatments
When menopause begins, women often have questions and concerns that Dr. Foust can address.  There are many treatment options available for menopausal symptoms, including hormone therapies, medications to ease hot flashes, and medications to prevent or treat osteoporosis.  Our knowledgeable medical staff is here to help guide you through this time of transition.  Contact our office to set up and appointment to discuss what treatment options are right for you.

Co-payments, Coinsurance & Deductibles

We currently accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Florida Health Care Plans, Humana, Humana Gold, Medicare plans, and certain Advantage Plans.

We collect applicable co-payments, coinsurance, and deductibles at the time of service.  When visiting our office, please bring your most current insurance card to ensure the information is valid.  Incorrect or out-of-date information will delay processing of your claim, and you may be responsible for payment in full.

We currently accept the following forms of payment: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, cash, and personal checks.

*If you are currently uninsured, please contact our office to discuss payment options.

We understand that there are times when you must miss an appointment due to emergencies or obligations for work or family.  However, when you do not call to cancel an appointment, you may be preventing another patient from getting much needed treatment.  Conversely, the situation may arise where another patient fails to cancel and we are unable to schedule you for a visit, due to a seemingly "full" appointment book.  If an appointment is not cancelled at least 24 hours in advance you will be charged a twenty five dollar ($75.00) fee; this will not be covered by your insurance company.
